SATURDAY DECEMBER 12, 2026 OCHTENDWANDELING SCHULENSMEER EN SCHULENSBROEK Close to the Lummen cloverleaf lies a surprising bird paradise: a stray polder landscape between Hasselt and Diest. In this nature reserve, you can walk in a vast, moist grassland where many birds feel at home. For centuries, the Schulensbroek was one large natural flood area that was flooded several months a year. The marsh was very fertile, to the pleasure of the farmers. Halfway through the 70s, humans tried to keep the water of the Demer and its many tributaries within limits with the construction of a detention basin. Het Schulensmeer was a fact. Now you can walk there and enjoy nature in one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders. Het Schulensmeer is ideal for bird spotting. The area is on a busy migratory bird route. The combination of the lake with the grasslands makes this area a bird paradise. In the past fifteen years, more than 300 different bird species have been observed here. Appointment: at 9 am at the parking lot at the end of the Beekstraat in Linkhout. End around 12 noon.
