Music that touches, in a place that speaks

Theme: Longing ~ Romantic songs from the 19th century ‘Longing’ is a word with many meanings: longing for peace, for a loved one, for a dream. It is also this intense and often elusive feeling that gave the Romantic period its name. Composers like Franz Schubert, Hugo Wolf, and Richard Strauss succeed like no other in giving voice to the many facets of this feeling. With the voice and the piano as intimate carriers of emotion, music is created that sometimes completely lays the heart bare and at other times seems to make time stand still. Sopraan Elke Janssens and pianist Wouter Valvekens present a selection from the 19th-century song repertoire in which these composers let their most personal musical language be heard.
