A tragicomedy by Jef Hoogmartens.
When a team of four scientists and an arrogant robot, after many years, finally arrive on Mars with the task of restarting human civilization, they receive the message from the last bastion on earth that a better alternative has been found in the meantime and their mission has become meaningless. But their trip to Mars was a one-way ticket. Four stranded individuals must go in search of their humanity.
Here they are. An impossible planet fled for… a meaningless existence.
Waiting for Godot, but unless Godot has a spaceship, they are going to have to wait a very long time.
The quartet tries to make the best of it nonetheless and set up the fundamental principles of a new society.
It soon becomes clear that completely redefining a new society in practice is just a little less evident than they thought in theory. Do they base themselves on the past, do they really try something new? Is a utopia a utopia? Can findings obtained from the past really offer wisdom for the future or are we doomed to always make the same mistakes again, regardless of which planet we find ourselves on?
Four people, a grumpy robot BEL.a, and one contact person on earth who is starting to show an ever-greater lack of interest in the five. Four individuals unable to form a group, let alone a society.
‘Mars 2064' is a tragicomic search for what it means to be human.
