Screening and Discussion of 'Sirat' with Galician Writer and Film Historian Diego Moldes. As part of the Mestre Mateo Awards, the Cervantes Institute Brussels will host a Galician Film Series, opening with a screening of 'Sirat'. The event will begin with a 30-minute introduction to Galician cinema, offering an overview of its historical development, major milestones, and the current state of the industry. Following the screening, there will be an open discussion with the audience moderated by Galician writer and film historian Diego Moldes. He will begin with a brief reflection on some of the film's central themes—its allegorical dimension, polarisation, and the search for meaning—before opening the floor for discussion. The conversation will also provide an opportunity to explore broader questions, such as what we understand today by Galician cinema, using 'Sirat' as a starting point. The film's hybrid identity—reflected in its use of multiple languages, its filming locations, and its production model—offers a compelling framework for discussing the evolving boundaries of contemporary Galician filmmaking. DIEGO MOLDES Diego Moldes (Pontevedra, 1977) is a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, and film historian. He has published 17 books as a sole author and has contributed to more than 50 additional publications as a co-author, editor, collaborator, prologue writer, or contributor. Eight of his books focus on cinema, including 'Greater Than Life: Writings on Cinema 2000–2025', published in two volumes in 2026, which brings together his film criticism and essays from the first quarter of the 21st century. His other film-related books include 'The Legacy of Vertigo' (2004), 'Roman Polanski: The Fantasy of the Tormented' (2005), 'European Cinema: The Great Films' (2008)—his most comprehensive work on cinema—'The Saragossa Manuscript: Jan Potocki's Novel Adapted for the Screen by Wojciech Jerzy Has' (2009; reprinted in 2025), 'Alejandro Jodorowsky' (2012), and, in part, 'Venuspasión' (2014). Moldes has published more than 200 articles and essays on cinema and currently writes for Jot Down and Zenda Libros. He has taught university courses in Marketing, History of the Media, and Cinema and Literature. Some of his books have been translated into English in the United States and into Hindi in India. He is also a member of the Scientific Council of the Nebrija Observatory of the Spanish Language.
