Must neoclassical be limited to repetition and minimalism? This question Paulette Verlee asked herself when making her new album ‘En Attendant’, in which she explores the boundaries of romanticism. With Met Schumann and Brahms in mind, she went in search of her own melodies in which expression and emotion are balanced with the sobriety and simplicity we are used to from her. Another constant in the work of Paulette Verlee is her love for humor and absurdity. And that could not be missing from this album either. That is why she provided the album with well-thought-out titles. The ten consecutive titles form a quote from the book ‘Waiting for Godot’ by Samuel Beckett. A small nod, nothing more, to the absurd and at times also funny play. On stage, we see Paulette Verlee again accompanied by her regular companion Maaike Organe on cello, and this time they do everything wirelessly. Chamber music of the highest order without amplification, beats, or loop station. A completely acoustic concert to dream away to. And those who find it difficult to close their eyes can let themselves be carried away by images and light scenes projected behind them on a unique decor of pillar cloths.
