The canal districts of Hasselt inside and outside the walls

Water has always determined the rhythm of Hasselt. What began as a medieval canal grew into the beating heart of industry, trade, and innovation. Langs de Nieuwe Demer and the Albert Canal saw the flourishing of cloth mills, jenever distilleries, and later modern industries. Today, these historic places are making way for lively neighborhoods with space for living, working, and relaxation. During this 5.5 km long walk, you will discover iconic industrial remains, contemporary architecture, and ambitious city projects such as the Demerpark and the green experience bridge.
