A young, ambitious writer has written her first play: a radical pamphlet for a new world. The lead role is played by her boyfriend, a young actor who wants to put himself in the spotlight with this performance. In the audience are the writer's father, himself a famous actor, and his girlfriend, a famous writer, plus a handful of neighbors and family members. However, the performance fails grandiosely and forms the starting signal for a stormy search for happiness, straight through generations.
Tsjechovs Meeuw has been brought to the stage so often that there seems to be nothing new to discover about it. But nothing could be further from the truth! Regisseur Nina Spijkers brings the work to life in a new way and chooses to reverse the genders of the main characters. Suddenly, a 130-year-old play feels as if it were written yesterday, with powerful female roles, forbidden queer relationships, and plenty of room for humor.
A performance about dreams, desires, grief, and jealousy. About the clash between younger and older generations and twisted family ties. For a classic like The Seagull, we are all too happy to take the bus to Maastricht!
