Tremens

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragedy Timon of Athens, CREW presents Tremens, an immersive experience that blends theatre and virtual reality. The audience is immersed in a virtual world where interaction, disorientation and alienating architecture take centre stage. The boundaries are blurring between avatars and live performers, between the real and the digital, between reality and illusion. From residence to virtual revolution CREW does not see virtual reality as an escape, but rather as a confrontation with our reality. During their residencies in November 2024 and the summer of 2025, they were able to further develop the work and test it with audiences. Performers can duplicate, migrate and record their movements and animations, creating a unique blend of live and digital interaction. Technically, Tremens was created using the Unreal Engine and the EXP Framework, supported by EMIL XR, which was previously developed to give performers maximum creative control. Tremens is a fusion of 3D environments, live and recorded performances, evolving virtual worlds and physical stage performances.
