La Puta Tierra starts as a blank sheet. Eight young people from diverse backgrounds will color it in, each with their own language, story, body, memory, identity, and history. While outside the walls of the theater, misunderstanding, miscommunication, violence, and prejudice rage, they create a safe space inside in which differences and contradictions may be highlighted.
In word, image, sound, and movement, the young people express the complexity of their identity. It is a story of navigating and balancing between where you are and who you are. About ground, land, space, territoriality, mechanisms of exclusion, and appropriation, but also about softness, care, and coming home. A story with a snowed-under happy ending: that what we do share with each other is not bound to a place or culture. Humanity.
La Puta Tierra, Spanish for ‘the cursed earth’, wants to color the growing fear around migration, by giving voices to a generation in a split, which is rooted in both the home culture of its parents and that of the country in which it was born. It is anger and softness mixed together, out of love for and concern for the mother, the earth, and how we treat her and each other.
La Puta Tierra is the fourth youth production by fABULEUS that is made entirely on Limburg soil and with a Limburg cast. In Limburg tries to bridge the gap between different cultures and backgrounds for a bridge generation. So too theater maker and performance artist Samuel Valor Reyes, who guides the young people and grew up in Beringen himself after his parents fled fascist Spain. He studied at the Toneelacademie Maastricht and makes physical crossover performances about empowerment, queerness, identity, and rituals.
