The Land of Herve, from syrup to lost zinc industry - Eddy and Siegfried

In the morning, we depart by bus to the Land Van Herve. A low plateau in the province of Liège with mainly meadows and orchards enclosed by typical hedges (bocage landscape). The region is located below the Voeren region and above the forests of the Hertogenwoud. Known for its Herve cheese with a very penetrating smell (let's say stinky cheese). When visiting this region, you will certainly return with a jar of Liège syrup (poepgelei), a bottle of cider, or a strong beer from the Brouwerij Val – Dieu. Anyone who has not tasted the apple pie from Aubel has shortchanged themselves. We have lunch together in Aubel. One drink is included with lunch. You can choose a vegetarian lunch. In the afternoon, we cross and walk on what was once the most important site for lead and zinc in Europe. During the industrial revolution of the 19th century, the strip of Plombières was exploited boundlessly without any ecological concern. We walk along didactic boards that give an idea of the importance of this industrial site from that time. After a few decades, the mines were exhausted and the area became a nature reserve where the soil still contains zinc and is now covered with Galmei-flora or plant species that can grow on soils that are contaminated by heavy metals. It is going to be a very fascinating but also relaxing discovery in a lesser-known Belgian region. Siegfried and Eddy will be happy to guide you in this.
