With a nod to the patron saint of the (Sint-Quintinus) cathedral, we are again programming Quinten en kwarten, after the basic intervals of polyphony. Hathor Consort opens the series with baroque, instrumental polyphony. The ensemble, named after a mother goddess from Egyptian mythology, dedicates itself under the artistic direction of Romina Lischka to music from the Renaissance and Baroque. A group of different sizes of the viola da gamba is central to this. Onder Henry VIII, the viol consort became an integral part of English court music. From aristocratic circles during the Elizabethan era, the phenomenon also spread further to the bourgeoisie under James I. De Engelse Fantasia offered a form that reflected both the spirit of the times and the individual expression of the composers for more than 150 years - until Purcell's ultimate masterpiece in the genre. Romina Lischka, together with her companions, also gives a unique interpretation of some fugues and canons from Die Kunst der Fuge van Bach. This brilliant work full of spiritual depth was composed in the last decade of his life and was only published after the death of the Thomas Cantor, in 1750. program Henry Purcell Fantasia nos. 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11 & 12 Johann Sebastian Bach Contrapunctus I, IV, XI & XVIII (from Die Kunst der Fuge) More performances in the Quinten en kwarten series on Dec 17, 26, Mar 23, and May 21, 27. artistic direction & soprano gamba Romina Lischka / alto gamba Joshua Cheatham / tenor gamba Nick Milne / bass gamba Irene Klein / © Robbrecht Desmet hathorconsort.com
