After the loss of her mother, Kaat, together with her father and a theater team, creates an intimate encounter in which AI makes a deceased woman speak again.
After visual artist Kaat Pype unexpectedly lost her mother, she started a photography project. She photographed her father in the houses of single women – contemporaries who had also lost someone – as if he had lived there for years. Regisseur Yves Degryse filmed these encounters.
In Sonder Kaat, her father, Yves and musician Berlinde Deman come together on stage. There the father enters into conversation with his deceased wife. Her voice, presence and physical appearance are recalled via artificial intelligence.
Can AI reunite a widower and his wife? What does technology do with our most intimate experiences? The technology in Sonder is not a miracle cure, but an opening through which love can breathe for a moment, before the silence overtakes it again.
