Jazz singer Tutu Puoane is fascinated by the poetry collection ‘In a Ribbon of Rhythm’ by her fellow countrywoman and contemporary Lebo Mashile. Her poetry gives a glimpse into the reality and emotional world of a young black South African woman after apartheid. Every time Tutu reads the collection, she hears music.
Together with Ewout Pierreux, Tutu Puoane wrote songs inspired by her favorite poems. This resulted in two albums: one with her band and one with the Nederlandse Metropole Orkest. For the first album, she received three South African Jazz Awards.
Tutu performs with four musicians in an intimate lineup of piano, guitar, bass, and drums. ‘Wrapped in Rhythm’ is an evening at the crossroads of jazz and soul, carried by Tutu’s expressive voice.
