Church of Our Lady of the Nativity Mariakerke: free visit and guided tours

Sun, 13 Sept 2026 · 11:00
Onze-Lieve-Vrouwgeboortekerk, Mariakerke (Gent)
Free
Visit this church in neo-Gothic style and the cemetery where quite a few artists were given their final resting place. From 1870 to around 1910, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Geboortekerk was enlarged and refurbished in neo-Gothic style. Under the leadership of Jean Baptist Bethune, quite a few artists were at work here. During the guided tours, you will admire their craftsmanship and learn more about their lives and work: stained glass windows, wood carvings, altars and retables, artistic ironwork, painting, and sculpture. The tour ends at the cemetery next to the church. You can visit the church freely throughout the day from 10 am to 6 pm. The guided tours start at 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm (duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes). Reservations are not necessary. Practical info: Monumentale Kerken Gent is the umbrella organization for the historical churches in Ghent. The association takes care of the maintenance and the appearance of the very rich heritage in these spaces of prayer. It aims for a structured cooperation between the church councils and a large group of volunteers. More info can be found at mkgent.be Accessibility: The church is partially accessible to wheelchair users.
