You are seven years old. Mom is in the hospital. Dad says she did “something stupid”. She finds it difficult to be happy. ‘Alle schone dingen’ (Every Brilliant Thing) is the story of a boy who, to give his depressed and suicidal mother hope again, starts a list of all the beautiful things that are worth living for. 1. Ice cream. 2. Kung fu movies. 3. Staying up late and being allowed to watch TV. 4. The color yellow. Every day he puts a note under her pillow with a beautiful thing written on it. “And I know she reads them, because they always come back corrected.” Despite the heavy theme, ‘Alle schone dingen’ is primarily a witty, moving, and comforting narrative in an intimate setting. An actor, a few props, and a few wonderful jazz songs, nothing more. The solo ‘Every Brilliant Thing’ by the British theater author Duncan Macmillan has captured the hearts of spectators and critics worldwide in recent years. Tom Dewispelaere steps into the skin of the narrator and goes in search of what makes life worth living together with the audience. A heartwarming story in times of soul distress. A small gift for those willing to help unpack. "Dewispelaere's performance gets under the skin and leaves a warm fire burning there."
