The 3rd symphony of Henryk Gorecki is a true masterpiece from the 20th-century symphonic repertoire. The work becomes world-famous through the performance of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Krzysztof Penderecki, with Portishead singer Beth Gibbons as soloist. Gorecki’s ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ comprises three parts with profound texts about motherhood, despair and suffering. The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The second part is a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during the Tweede Wereldoorlog. The third is a Silesian folk song about a mother looking for her son who was killed by the Germans during the Silesian uprisings. The first and third parts are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, the second part from the view of a child who has been separated from a parent. The work forms within Gorecki's repertoire the transition from his earlier dissonant to his later, more well-known tonal style. It will be an evening of profound classical music for lovers of minimal and drones, with a fairly dark edge. Het Belgian National Orchestra (BNO), founded in 1936, is the privileged partner of Bozar and a loyal partner of the Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd. BNO performs with world-class soloists such as Hilary Hahn, Thomas Hampson, Wynton Marsalis, Sergey Khachatryan and Roberto Alagna.
