De Belgische beer culture has a long history. First, people used gruit, later hops…. The first 'beer law', the Reinheitsgebot, dates from the 16th century and was only abolished in 1987! And the first pilsner was brewed in the Czech Republic... Exactly 10 years ago, in 2016, Belgian beer culture received the ultimate international recognition: inclusion on the list of Immaterieel Cultureel Erfgoed van Unesco. Moreover, Leuven is the beer center of Flanders. Our story tells the history of Leuven's large and smaller breweries.
