Film + Concert with Tsubasa Hori & Andrew Claes Een hallucinatory film journey about fatherhood, failure, and fighting spirit with live music accompaniment About the film In 2023, Micha Volders travels to Thailand where he records SŏN in D.I.Y. guerrilla style, a short film that explores a father-son relationship against the backdrop of Muay Thai, the Thai national martial art. He returns a second time with his father, this time to meet local musicians, which results in valuable sound recordings that he incorporates into SŏN. SŏN is a poetic portrait of a former Thai boxer, played by the Bangkok-born actor Wachara Kanha, who is trying to find his life again. A story about inheritance and loss. About getting lost and searching. About continuing to do what you have always done, even if the outcome is nil. Volders took care of everything himself: camera, editing, music, and sound. Inspired by the whole process, he created parallel music that became a double album of 81 minutes - a lush sound universe full of contrasts: minimalist structures, meandering soundscapes, and maximum outbursts, brought by a grating, panting, and alien orchestra that seems to fall apart at any moment, yet exhales a fragile and elusive beauty. The soundtrack was released as a 2LP Limited Edition via Mutropia. About the music and live performance In this performance, the film is no longer bound to the screen. The SŏN soundtrack is brought to life live by a trio with Tsubasa Hori (KODO), Andrew Claes (STUFF.), and Micha Volders himself. The music merges electronic and acoustic elements into a rich sonic landscape that reinforces the emotional world of the film. The performance is accompanied by visuals from the archives of SŏN. Presented as a series of tableaux vivants, these images expand the visual language of the film and extend the narrative universe beyond the screen.
