For those interested, introduced from 8:20 PM by Leo De Weerdt —– Basel Adra is a young Palestinian activist from the Westelijke Jordaanoever who has been fighting his entire life against the mass expulsion of Palestinians by the Israeli authorities. He documents the systematic destruction of villages in his region, where houses are demolished by bulldozers and residents are driven away by Israeli soldiers. He posts the footage he captures on social media. When he meets the Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham , an unlikely friendship develops between the two, despite the great inequality and the differences between them. But that bond comes under increasing pressure…. In an area where any dialogue between the communities seems to have evaporated, ‘NO OTHER LAND’ was made by a mixed Palestinian-Israeli collective of Basel Adra, Yuval, Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor : that alone is an act of resistance (the filmmakers received death threats), and yet it offers a glimmer of hope in an otherwise seemingly hopeless situation. As painful, harrowing, and tragic as the image the film paints is, ‘NO OTHER LAND’ is simultaneously a call to action and an example of how things can be different and more just. Awarded as Beste Documentaire at the Berlinale. Nominated for the Oscar for Beste Documentaire. NO OTHER LAND Directed by: Basel Adra, Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor & Hamdan Ballal PAL 2024, 95 min.
