Aperitif tour: Alleys

In Lokeren were often small residential courtyards behind gates, and therefore barely visible in the streetscape. An extra door in a facade and a narrow corridor led to a courtyard with a pump, surrounded by tiny, impoverished houses without running water. Residents lived close to and with each other, and were forced to share joys, sorrows, and plumbing. Despite the lack of any luxury, they often formed close-knit, caring communities. From the 1950s onwards, the courtyards were demolished to make way for new housing projects. Gathering at 10 AM at Visit Lokeren, Markt 15. Registration from October 1 at 10 AM.
