De Pakhuizen Event

De Pakhuizen

Sun, 13 Sept 2026 · 10:00
De Pakhuizen, Bruges
Free
A lesser-known remnant of the maritime past of Brugge  In 1665 is being excavated right near the Dampoort de Handelskom: a spacious, rectangular basin where seagoing vessels can moor to load and unload. Seagoing vessels that, thanks to the Oostendse Vaart, can sail as far as Bruges, and from there continue via the Gentse Vaart to Ghent. On the initiative of the Kamer van Koophandel, the first warehouse with office space was built in 1757 on the south side of the Handelskom. It was already significantly expanded on the west side in 1771, and a storage building followed in 1781. Most warehouses have been demolished, but an 18th-century remnant has been integrated into the long 19th-century wing. Several floors of this wing can be visited. Practical info: Visit accompanied by a guide, no reservation required. Also open for visits on Saturday, September 12, between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Accessibility: The upper floors can only be reached by stairs.
