Opus Apparatus is an energetic theater concert that you can describe as Ziggy Stardust meets Frankenstein. Na The Great Downhill Journey or Little Tommy and The only way is UP, Boris Van Severen and Jonas Vermeulen seek each other out again. This time they are making an energetic mix of concert and visual theater about humans and technology, about creator and creation. Five performing musicians are on stage with an overhead projector that starts as a functional piece of decor, but song after song begins to lead a life of its own. Is our urge to create inexhaustible? When do we hit its limits? Are the endless innovations real solutions or are they fodder for new problems? The creators find this theme in the oeuvre of David Bowie, which was largely inspired by the space race in the sixties, and especially in his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Not only because of the music – the idea of a prophet who must bring salvation also speaks immensely to the imagination. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, in turn, fits seamlessly with the desire for a story about a human creation that takes the upper hand and heralds the downfall. In times of artificial intelligence, machine learning and the urge for expansion, it is a highly topical story.
