Bringing life to the museum – in any museum – has not been the easiest task for a museum director lately. ‘KMSKA Late’ with performances in word, music, image, and dance on Thursday evenings is a fine example of that; ‘Night at the museum’ on VRT with Thomas Vanderveken and a guest-of-note also fits into that list. Attention to the life in the past of our KMSKA is, in that light, complementary. The recent renovation of the museum should not make us forget the devastation that V-bombs caused in the final days of the world war in Antwerp, including in the immediate vicinity. ‘The KMSKA in wartime’ as Koen Cools presents it, therefore covers many more aspects than the security of the stored art treasures, on site and elsewhere. How the museum dealt with the so-called ‘degenerate art’ in the collection, and how to safeguard the valuable pieces from the collecting mania of the leaders of the Nazi regime: it is all covered. The museum as a shelter for the local residents - also and especially during the V-bombs - is discussed, as is the improper use the occupier made of the museum. The guided tour through the museum illustrates these things, makes history visible here and there, even ‘tangible’.
