This film is based on the book of the same name from 2005 by the Dutch writer Tommy Wieringa. Joe Speedboot is one of the best Dutch-language novels of this century. Two years ago, the weekly magazine Knack put the book at number 1 in its top 50. In 2005, production company IJswater Films began preparations for the film adaptation, but Wieringa and IJswater Films had a profound disagreement about the screenplay. Wieringa was of the opinion that the proposed film adaptation would detract from his book, and together with the publisher, he filed a lawsuit, which he also won on appeal. In March 2021, it was announced that Wieringa had chosen production company BALDR Film to have his book filmed after all. Synopsis Nadat Fransje Hermans ends up in a wheelchair due to a bizarre accident, he seems doomed to spend his days in the sluggish village of Lomark. Because of the accident, he can no longer move and talk, and with only one functional arm, his life seems hopeless. That changes, however, when the charismatic and reckless newcomer Joe Speedboot arrives and strikes up an unlikely friendship with Fransje. Will it help Fransje to realize his passionate dreams, satisfy his longing for the enchanting PJ, or is he just another project of the adventure-craving Joe?
