The Duitse Hoek may not mean much to you, but before WWI, more than 20,000 Germans lived in Antwerp. Whoever stepped out of the Central Station towards De Keyserlei imagined themselves in Germany: Hotel Weber, Dortmunder beer,… De Duitse wave to our regions happened in different movements. The first “brother couples” already came during the Franse Revolutie. The Kreglinger brothers bought three guild houses on the Grote Markt. The families Nottebohm, Grisar, Von Malinckrodt, Fuchs, Müller, Bracht followed… A second generation built spacious mansions around the Koning Albertpark. Under the guidance of our guide, Alex Elaut, we walk through the former gardens of the Kreglinger family (now Province House). Via a 16th-century parceling of pleasure gardens, we walk further to the Grote Steenweg. In the former home of deputy Charles van Nyen, we look at the beautiful murals by Jos Ratinckx. In short: a fascinating walk! We gather at the entrance of the Districtshuis Harmoniepark in Antwerp at 1:45 PM.
