1957. 20-year-old French car mechanic Guy Foucher has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, who works in her mother's chic but financially struggling umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy leaves for a two-year combat mission in Algeria, he and Geneviève make love. She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting the marriage proposal of a rich diamond merchant.
