10 years after their emotional and painful divorce, Marianne and Johan meet again. They reflect on their marriage and everything that brought them to this point. Commentaar Een of the great masterpieces from Bergman's later years, initially made as a six-part miniseries for the Swedish television channel SVT in 1973. A year later, Bergman transformed the 281-minute story into a condensed feature film of 169 minutes, today the most well-known version. Partly based on his own relationship with lead actress Liv Ullmann, it is by far one of Bergman's most personal films. The influence of the film reaches far, then and still. Richard Linklater and Woody Allen have both indicated that the film had a huge influence on their career, and a few years ago a remake was made on HBO with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in the lead roles. The series/film also caused quite a stir from conservative corners at the time - for example, the film was accused of being the cause of rising divorce rates in Europe.
