Anderlecht: Architecture and Abstraction

The Meir neighborhood, near the Parc Astrid, contains some beautiful Art Déco and modernist achievements and has managed to keep an architectural authenticity through its harmony and coherence. Anderlecht, a commune with multiple facets, experienced significant urban development in the Interwar period. Le Parc Astrid (renamed as such in 1935) was inaugurated in 1911. The streets that surround it would then become the theater for the deployment of Art Déco architecture. Many very inspired anonymous people rub shoulders with great names of architecture such as François Van Meulecom or Antoine Courtens and participate in the constitution of a very homogeneous whole. Our walk will take us to the historic center of the commune, where the St Guidon church stands. We will be able to discover an astonishing building by the artist Victor Servrancks, a major figure of Belgian modernism better known for his large abstract canvases.
