Early Music: "Like Smoke and Shadows..." (Komorebi Consort)

Sat, 22 Aug 2026 · 20:00
Sint-Catharinakerk, Wondelgem (Gent)
€15–20
Exactly two centuries after the premiere of J.S. Bach's cantata “Was frag ich nach der Welt” in Leipzig, two Japanese cities became the disastrous example of the fragility and transience of human existence in this world. Zoals Balthasar Kindermanns text, originally from 1664, summarizes this cantata: the world can effectively disappear in a sigh of smoke and shadows. Such themes were of great importance to artists like Kindermann, Buxtehude and the Bach family, whose works and craft serve as a reflection on human existence and society after a disastrous period like the Dertigjarige Oorlog. Het Komorebi consort creates a unique, eighteenth-century sound world through the use of historical instruments, including the beautiful Potvlieghe organ of the Wondelgem Sint-Catharinakerk. Let yourself be carried away on an intimate journey that makes us reflect on the lessons of the past and their relevance to the present. Normal ticket: €20 <25 / student: €15
