Life is hard for Baba Ayub. Every day he works his barren land, turns the soil, and takes care of the few scrawny olive trees. From early in the morning until late at night, every day again. But still, Baba Ayub is not poor. After all, he has 4 beautiful daughters with azure-blue eyes and one son, Sabr. Here, Baba Ayub feels like a king, and little Sabr, with his large olive-green eyes, is the crown prince. One day, Djinn appears, a terrible monster from the Valley at the Andere Kant of the Mountain. Everyone knows that the house where Djinn knocks must give up one child. One finger that must be cut off to save the hand. The lot falls on little Sabr, and Baba Ayubs heart is torn apart. The years pass, the land withers, and the tears of Baba Ayub continue to fall like drops on a much too hot plate. His sadness grows while the old man shrivels and waits. He waits for 1001 olive-green days and azure-blue nights long. And then Baba Ayub leaves. Over the mountain, in search of Sabr. SABR stands for patience and perseverance in Arab culture. Met Sabr the cactus manages to bear beautiful flowers after many years. This performance is such a flower. A performance about being afraid of the unknown, about loss, and how to deal with it. And about waiting unbearably long. But that also works. Met Sabr… In SABR, makers Mokhallad Rasem (Toneelhuis, Het Paleis, De Maan, Malpertuis…) and Joost Van den Branden (artistic direction Tieret) join forces to bring the enormous richness of the Arab world to life in word, image, and music. Multi-instrumentalist and soundscape artist Peter Verhelst weaves a beautiful carpet on which actress Ineke Van Wambeke and puppeteer Joost Van den Branden wonderfully tell and visualize the story. In an enchanting decor of sand sculptures, time slips away, grain by grain. Until only the waiting remains, waiting for Sabr. (Very freely based on a short story by Khaled Hosseini).
