The Lovin’ Spoonful found each other in 1964 in Greenwich Village, New York, where folk music (with among others Bob Dylan and Joan Baez) was then at its height. Folkies John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky together with rockers Steve Boone and Joe Butler formed what they called an “electric jugband” and the folk rock of Lovin’ Spoonful was born!
In 1965 they helped shape it and by 1966 the group was one of the most highly regarded bands and the most popular act in the US, after the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Their first single, “Do You Believe in Magic,” shot to the top of the charts and was followed by a string of hits such as “Daydream,” “Summer in the City,” “Darling Be Home Soon,” “Rain on the Roof,” “Nashville Cats”...
When psychedelic music reared its head in 1967, the Spoonful struggled with adapting their approach and saw their popularity decline before breaking up in 1968.
