Carillon concert: Jasper Depraetere and Merel Van Hemelryck

Under the theme 'Café Romantique', Jasper Depraetere and Merel Van Hemelryck let sizzling bronze bells merge with the deep, warm sound of a cello during this evening full of romance! Romantic atmospheres full of passion and longing are evoked in the repertoire of, among others, Bellini, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. But to say romance is also to say sensuality, lust, and passion... and so a tango by Piazzolla also helps set the mood for this café. Isn't pop culture also permeated with declarations of love of all kinds? A number of indestructible hits will not be missing! Jasper is the carillonneur of our municipality and deputy city carillonneur of Lier. He studied at the Koninklijke Beiaardschool 'Jef Denyn' in Mechelen and at the Luca School of Arts. He obtained his Master of Music in carillon and music education there with the highest distinction. In 2019, he won second prize in the Internationale Beiaardwedstrijd Koningin Fabiola in Mechelen. He teaches at the Carillon School in Mechelen. Since this year, he has also been the chairman of the Vlaamse Beiaardvereniging. Merel started cello lessons at the age of 9. Passionate about music, Merel continued her music studies at 'LUCA School of Arts' in Leuven. In 2023, she went on an Erasmus exchange to the 'Kunst Universität Graz' in Austria. She followed masterclasses with Pieter Wispelwey and Roel Dieltiens. As a cellist, she plays in various orchestral and chamber ensembles.
