A festive procession with the city
De Belgische artist Thomas Verstraeten is no stranger to large-scale artistic interventions in public space. For his latest project, he asks the residents of Ghent to participate in a grand reversal ritual. A facade on the Vrijdagmarkt and a facade in the Brugse Poort district are accurately recreated and placed in front of their original counterparts. During the Odegand music festival, the facades will tear themselves away from the row of houses. Accompanied by local residents and musicians, they will meet each other in a procession. Eventually, the Vrijdagmarkt facade will end up in the Brugse Poort and vice versa, surrounded by the celebrating crowd. With this cross-movement, Verstraeten exposes the tension and connection between the historic center and the city's edge, showing that facades are like masks of the city behind which much can be discovered. Everyone is welcome to experience it.
‘De Opstand of the Facades – De Karavaan’ is a production of OBV and Gent Festival, VIERNULVIER, CAMPO, Kopergietery and NTGent and is part of OdeGand.
After the festive procession, Thomas Verstraeten will place the facades on the stage of NTGent as a set for a new music theater performance ‘De Opstand of the Facades - De Opera’.
