Kerk Sint-Jan De Doper, Binkom (Lubbeek)

Ontdek Binkom, the least densely populated sub-municipality of Lubbeek. The imposing Saint John the Baptist church, with cathedral ambitions, impresses from a height of 83 m over the wide surroundings. To the north of the ridge on which the church is built, the streams flow towards the Winge, and to the south towards the Velpe. The village center has several protected houses, including a former rectory from 1788. We also visit the Rochus Chapel. The first chapel dates from 1532 and was a prominent place of pilgrimage throughout the centuries. Farmers took water from the nearby Rochus fountain to protect their livestock from diseases. Ernest Claes described his participation in 1895 in the pilgrimage from Zichem to the Rochus chapel in Binkom. The current chapel was built in 1960 with a Lourdes grotto next to it. We walk through a gently rolling and fertile landscape along forests, meadows, and orchards. Departure and end: at the Saint-Jan de Doper church; Kerkstraat 1 (along Tiensesteenweg) in Binkom (3211 Lubbeek) Departure: 2:00 PM Walking shoes or boots are always useful. There is parking available. Distance +/- 6 km Duration: 2 hours Base rate: 5 Euro. Children up to 12 years: free. ,
