De Tour and Taxi at Kanal: what life after industry?

Industry was long the main economic activity in Brussels before it declined, from the 1970s onwards, and gave way to offices. This evolution is particularly tangible in the maritime district which nevertheless retains a strong identity marked by industrial history, traces of which are found both in historic buildings and in the organization of public space. Despite this tertiarization which had a strong impact on the evolution of a site like Tour and Taxis, more recent urban projects turn to residents and visitors, with initiatives such as the Kanal cultural project or the restoration of the old Byrrh depot. How is this industrial identity being put to good use again in urban projects? How is urbanity being rebuilt through reconversion projects, and how can the pitfalls of territorial marketing be avoided? Are industrial activities finding a new place in these processes of transformation and production of the city?
