Cristóbal de Morales: Requiem - Vox Luminis
Fri, 21 May 2027 · 20:00
Sint-Quintinuskathedraal, Hasselt
€15–30
Vox Luminis, an undisputed audience favorite among early music ensembles, is coming to Hasselt again. With fifteen singers, they highlight two important works by the Spanish composer Cristóbal de Morales, a central figure in 16th-century Iberian polyphony.
Morales was mainly active in the papal chapel in Rome and left his mark on his time with a rigorous and expressive vocal style, influenced by the traditions of Flemish polyphony, and with a distinct Spanish sentiment on top of that.
Het Officium defunctorum and the Missa pro defunctis are part of the liturgy for the funeral. Morales uses a dense and meditative polyphony here, characterized by great textual clarity. These works are one of the highlights of sacred music from the Spaanse Siglo de oro.
Na Orlandus Lassus: Lamentations by the Huelgas Ensemble (see Mar 23, 26) concludes the Quinten en kwarten series of this season with Vox Luminis and this polyphony, also written in the 16th century.
More performances in the Quinten en kwarten series on Oct 23 and Dec 17, 26, and Mar 23, 27.
