A streetcar named Desire is a top classic from the Amerikaanse Realisme, and established Marlon Brando’s name as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Tramlijn is not a nice, light, and airy piece. It tackles some of the most unpleasant social and psychological themes: narcissism, alcoholism, domestic violence, and rape. Yet it is one of the most performed and beloved pieces in the theater, precisely because it is so truthful.
