Pépée, that was the nickname we all gave her, me, my family, her entourage, and the entire Liège bar. “The white wolf among the black wolves” Frédéric, her great colleague and lawyer friend, told me. Pépée led a great career as a lawyer. My mother… a little less. This woman was multiple. Pépée chained trials, my mother glasses of wine. By day at the bar, by night in the bars. “You will end up stupid but nice” she told me, one afternoon, screwed as usual on her old wicker chair, cards in hand in the middle of a game of solitaire. It is this story that I tell here. The story of Pépée, a lawyer at the Liège bar, who was also my mother. A paradoxical mother, flamboyant but tortured, terribly brilliant but just as negligent, absent but oh so omnipresent in my life. She was as much my greatest pride as my biggest shame.
