A tumbling body wanders through the city. With Lost Persons Area , Maria Degrève takes us in tow through the old city center of Ostend. The artist assumes a vulnerable pose, again and again, as a silent form of resistance. There is power in repetition! We follow her body as it tumbles in a city that lets its own history fall. Onderste-Boven, Bouleversé, Upside-Down! A flash of bewilderment during my first route through the historic city center of Ostend. Deliberate neglect, vacancy, deterioration and decay of cultural and architectural heritage. A violent strategy that leads to demolition followed by construction pits and craters. Voids, voids, voids, a war image in the urban landscape lingered. The performance ‘Lost Persons Area’ as a response. Flailing legs and buttocks in the air. A fuchsia skirt. A tumbling, inverted, fragile body. A nod to the fallen angels of Dirk Bouts and to the grotesque figures from the shells and huts of Bosch and Bruegel. - Maria Degrève PRACTICAL We take a trip through old Ostend.
