Ever wondered if you could do stand-up? In six weeks, you'll find out... and finish by performing your own five-minute set to a live audience! This six-week course, taught by writer and comedian Kym Nelson, welcomes beginners and the simply curious - anyone who's ever wondered what it takes to make a room full of people laugh. You'll learn the essentials of joke writing and performance, play with characters and personas, and build material inspired by your own life. With fun weekly homework, supportive practice, and guided exploration, you'll grow your skills week by week until you're confidently delivering a five-minute stand-up set to an audience! Week 1: Finding the Funny Learn the basics of joke structure, explore where comedians get material, and start turning everyday moments into punchlines. Week 2: Stories Into Sets Shape personal stories into comedic bits, add punchlines and tags, and build early momentum for your set. Week 3: Persona & Character Play Experiment with onstage persona, try character-driven comedy, and discover what version of "you" gets the biggest laughs. Week 4: Performance & Presence Practice delivery, pacing, mic technique, and confidence-building skills to make your material shine onstage. Week 5: Edit, Tighten, Polish Refine your set, strengthen transitions, sharpen jokes, and prepare a tight, audience-ready five-minute performance. Week 6: Rehearse and Refine Run through your full set, get final notes before it’s time to perform. Time to Perform! Take the stage in a supportive live showcase to debut your five-minute stand-up set. About your teacher: (kym_comedyplayground) Kym is a writer and comedian, trained by one of the UK's leading comedy coaches and by renowned clown master and theatre professor Philippe Gaulier. Her performances blend character work, storytelling, and physical comedy. Described by a theatre critic as "a great and relatable storyteller," she has written and performed two solo shows and performs regularly at comedy clubs and festivals, including the Edinburgh Fringe. She teaches comedy in the UK and Belgium, including how to bring humour into the workplace. She hosts regular comedy nights in Antwerp, including shows at Kavka and The F-Word, Antwerp's first all-female comedy night, which she founded. She also hosts comedy events at The Nine in Brussels.
