Centuries-old a care site, today a cultural hotspot. De Bijlokesite is bursting with history. During this tour, we let the buildings and walls speak.
The guide tells about the origin of the then Bijloke hospital and monastery (where the STAM now houses) and takes you into the turbulent period of the Iconoclasm. The oldest building phases, the neo-Gothic hospital of Adolphe Pauli, the expansions in the 19th century, the Anatomisch Instituut, the (poly)clinics, and the recently restored Maternity ward, everything is covered.
As hard as body and limb were cared for here once, as strongly is the site today a place to indulge your heart in dance, music, heritage, and culture. And that in buildings that are thoughtfully repurposed and grow along.
Want to experience more? The STAM opens its doors for free from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Or visit the gardens and enjoy a coffee in this impressive historical setting.
