THE TEACHER WHO PROMISED THE SEA by Patricia Font (Spain 2025) The film is based on the true story of Antoni Benaiges, a young Catalan schoolteacher who arrives in a small village in Spain in 1933. Bright and inspiring, Antoni shakes up the prevailing conservatism to the great delight of his students, thanks to his new teaching method inspired by Freinet. Although his students make wonderful progress, the villagers remain suspicious, and his ideas are perceived as communist by the village's Catholic priest, who unintentionally becomes a formidable enemy. In a tense political climate, following the rise of Franco and fascism, Antoni fights to defend his vision of a free, poetic, and lively education. It is thanks to Ariadna, his great-granddaughter, that the journey of this extraordinary man is revealed to us. Car Ariadna is determined to trace this great-grandfather who remains an enigma in the family history. She joins an excavation team on-site that is still uncovering mass graves of victims of Francoist repression today.
