The Dr. Guislain Museum is housed in a psychiatric institution with a rich history and the ambition to view mental health differently. It is the first ‘insane asylum’ in Belgium where mentally ill people were treated in a humane and therapeutically responsible manner. More than worth a visit! We are visiting the museum, but we are specifically coming for an exhibition Roger Ballen (New York/South Africa). Ballen is known worldwide for his poignant black-and-white photography, in which reality and imagination merge. In “Drawing meets Photography”, he combines photography with drawings, installations, and absurd elements into mysterious and sometimes confrontational images. His work raises questions about identity, madness, dreams, and the boundaries of the human mind. Themes that fit particularly well with the atmosphere and history of the Museum Dr. Guislain. There is an opportunity to have a picnic in the beautiful garden of the museum afterward. Meeting on Thursday, July 16 at 8:45 AM in the central hall of the Central Station in Brussels. We take the train at 9:01 AM (train towards Ostend). The tour starts at 10:30 AM. Before that, we still have half an hour to have a coffee in the café. By 12:00 PM you can head back to Brussels, or you can hang around a bit longer in picturesque Ghent.
