In the early 17th century, a mysterious soldier arrives in a remote Protestant German village. He claims to be the heir of a long-abandoned farmstead and presents documents to substantiate his claim. Although the villagers view him with suspicion at first, he gradually wins their trust. As a hard-working and God-fearing man, he manages to secure a place within the close-knit community. But his carefully constructed identity is based on a lie. A fascinating historical drama that makes centuries-old social conventions surprisingly topical. Markus Schleinzer (Michael, Angelo) makes a layered and oppressive drama about identity, freedom, and the social roles imposed upon us. In beautiful black-and-white, a closed Protestant community unfolds that evokes both the subliminal threat of Michael Hanekes The White Ribbon and the suffocating group dynamics of Lars von Triers Dogville. Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest) is phenomenal in the lead role and was awarded the Zilveren Beer at the Berlinale for her performance.
