Renaissance of an ancient pilgrim route in Ardenne
Battue by the winds of the heights of Trois-Ponts, the Saint-Jacques church, rebuilt many times, has been watching for centuries over an ancient pilgrimage path to Compostela. Rebuilt in 1962 by the architect Marcel Gennen after the destruction caused by the Battle of the Bulge, the place now surprises with its astonishing bell tower and its rubble stone nave with modernist lines, inspired by the spiritual momentum of Vatican II.
Passing through Saint-Jacques, walkers and pilgrims, in increasing numbers on this ancient route rediscovered and revalued through the Via Arduinna, appreciate, as in the past, the shade of its centuries-old oak and the charm of a site anchored in a distant past.
1 SCREENING with WITNESSES & EXCHANGES:
Walking for peace from Malmedy to Sarajevo.
A singular initiative gives the pilgrimage a very current meaning
In the autumn of 2025, taking the historical routes of the Via Arduinna, 12 women, 12 men, and 1 dog connected Malmedy to Orval to experience a collective pilgrimage dedicated to peace. From this civic, spiritual, and human adventure was born the Pilgrims of Peace project: a caravan eager to walk towards Sarajevo and perhaps Jerusalem. Between songs, meetings, and silence, this journey is intended as a simple and powerful gesture: a poetic act of resistance, of hope, of life.
From May 2026, starting from Orval, the peace caravan continued its pilgrimage, new walkers joined it, for a few days or more, throughout this journey which ends in August.
The documentary "Pilgrims of peace" directed by Alain Laurent, followed by a long time of sharing between returning pilgrims and the curious, will allow discovering its origin, its spirit, and, as a preview, the experience lived during these past months.
This activity takes place in the program of Journées du Patrimoine in Haute-Ardenne "Chemins du Sacré, sacred paths" proposed on the territory of the municipalities of Gouvy, Lierneux, Stavelot, Stoumont, Trois-Ponts, and Vielsalm
