Until 1986, Broek De Naeyer was owned by the Denayer paper mill. It was located further away in Willebroek along the canal. Broek De Naeyer was used to collect wood and for the discharge of wastewater. Water basins were dug for the wastewater. There, the water could settle before it flowed into the Rupel. That is why Broek De Naeyer is contaminated with, among other things, PFAS. In the autumn of 2024, the European project PFASTER started to tackle the pollution.
