De Centrale Begraafplaats is a beautiful place: quiet, lots of nature, and a wealth of history. Also about the First World War: it is a world in miniature, you can tell the whole story of the war there. There are, of course, the graves of Belgian soldiers, victims of the fighting or of Spaanse Griep. But there are also the graves of children who died in Allied bombings. Or the final resting place of Achiel Van Acker, who also ended up in the merry-go-round of war as a sixteen-year-old. And the story of stretcher-bearer Herman Chielens, for whom the war became too gruesome and who fled twice. Guides: Karl Duc
