The project was born in 2022 around a complicit trio: pianist Igor Gehenot, double bassist Sal La Rocca, and drummer Umberto Odone. Originally, their desire was simple: to play jazz standards that bring comfort, in a spirit of returning to the roots, after the upheavals of the health crisis. Together, they revisit with freshness and vitality the great names of post-bop from Freddie Hubbard to Lee Morgan, passing through Mulgrew Miller and Nicholas Payton.
It is from this first impulse that Shining Face, the pianist's new album, emerges. Dedicated to his son, this new opus is distinguished by a clear common thread: a taste for swing and melody. In continuity with his previous albums, Igor Gehenot affirms his musical signature more than ever: chiseled writing, harmonic sensitivity, and profound artistic coherence.
Carried by an obvious alchemy between the three musicians – already reunited within the Sal La Rocca Quintet. The new group of pianist Igor Gehenot explores a vibrant post-bop repertoire, both demanding and accessible.
