Gerechtsdeurwaarder Orsolya must, in accordance with her profession, carry out the orders of the court. This time it concerns the eviction of a gambling-addicted alcoholic who has illegally squatted in a basement. He says he will pack his things, goes into the basement, and commits suicide. The shock is great for forty-year-old Orsolya. Was the eviction morally justifiable? Could she have acted differently? And what is her role as an executor of court orders that are at the service of real estate developers in Cluj, a provincial town in Transylvania that wants to ride the market-driven neoliberal wave? Remarkable: director Radu Jude shot Kontinental ’25 almost entirely with the iPhone to give the film an unvarnished contemporary character; the aesthetics of beautiful images would camouflage the brutal reality too much.
