‘fiction and reality, sometimes in a stranglehold, sometimes like a hug’
he untied his scarf
hung it on the flagpole
and hoisted it up
“that way you can see me waving”
he said
“if you look up
you see me waving”
and he left
In KAMP, truth and fiction take each other in a stranglehold. Inspired by true events, this piece waves from theater auditions via concentration camps to tripadvisor reviews. All this with a top team: Sofie Decleir, Jeroen Van der Ven, Zouzou Ben Chikha, Robbert Vervloet, Astrid Cox and Tania Van der Sanden.
Propaganda, cruelty, and imagination, it all hangs together. Just look at the hallucinatory fake documentaries about how cozy it was in those Nazi or Japanese camps. Or think of the actors who survived the camps by performing serial theater, and stretched their lives with cliffhanger after cliffhanger. And what about fake news about a war? All that is KAMP: a performance about the danger of the lie and the beauty of inventing.
